    The Sr. Director of Labor Relations provides proactive and reactive labor relations expertise to GES operations teams, consistent with the Company's overall labor relations and human resources strategy. The successful candidate supports the Regional Vice President for the Central and East Regions of GES and must build relationships across the organization as well as relationships with national labor leaders.

    The focus of this role is on mitigating the potential negative impact of labor issues while furthering proactive employee relations efforts to create alignment and consistency while driving accountability within the function.

     

    Responsibilities

    • Act as the chief spokesperson and negotiator for 60+ collective bargaining agreements across the Central and East Region of GES.
    • Negotiate all components of the collective bargaining agreements for GES with appropriate union officials ensuring that an agreement between both parties is reached.
    • Develop the collective bargaining strategy for operations with union representation, in collaboration with each local GES Operations Team to support overall business objectives.
    • Train and offer counsel to managers and employees, as appropriate, regarding the interpretation and application of the collective bargaining agreement as well as the intent, application, and compliance requirements of labor and regulatory laws.
    • Assist local Operations teams with efforts to increase the union’s availability of skilled workers and compliance with GES safety standards.
    • Evaluate grievances and other local conflicts resulting from the labor agreements to determine if contractual violations have occurred and implement appropriate remedies to grieving parties.
    • Ensure the labor relations strategy is implemented, as agreed with local management, to mitigate the potential negative impact of any issues on continued operations.
    • Develop and implement "Early Warning" systems to identify labor relations issues that may escalate beyond the local level.
    • Develop Labor Relations programs, tools and resources, incorporating best practice from field operations, to serve as resources for the field and support the creation of alignment, consistency and accountability in the management of labor issues.
    • Develop sustainable relationships with senior management in order to facilitate effective dialogue to address and resolve issues and proactively implement effective workplace practices.
    • Build relationships with key labor organizations including relationships with various national labor union organizations and their key representatives to create a positive platform to address issues as they arise and build future relationship equity by obtaining input on a proactive basis.
    • Identify best practices and emerging issues in the area of labor relations.
    • Incorporate best practices into current strategy and practices, as appropriate.
    • Must be able to travel for business as required. 

    Qualifications

    • BS Degree required preferably in Management, Economics, or Labor Law or a related field.
    • 10+ years of experience in a combination of management, labor relations, human resources, benefits administration, compensation or labor relations law.
    • Currently serve or recently served in a Sr. Director Labor Relations.
    • Required to have experience as chief negotiator representing management in direct union negotiations with major national unions.
    • Possess very extensive knowledge and demonstrated experience in difficult labor relations and contract negotiations. 
    • Experience in negotiating labor contracts representing management with demonstrated skill in concessionary bargaining, including bargaining to impasse and implementing the company’s final offer, drafting and costing collective bargaining contract provisions.
    • Experience in multi-employer pension plans, grievance resolution, and ability to problem-solve through labor management activities.
    • Experience developing and implementing both proactive and reactive labor relations strategy and plans in close collaboration with operations leadership.
    • Strong hands on union negotiations experience, preferably including experience with Teamsters, Carpenters, Electricians, IUPAT and IATSE.
    • Collective Bargaining: Knowledge of the collective bargaining process, including understanding of union organization process, contract negotiations, grievance handling, multiemployer pension plans, and labor & management relationships.
    • Employment Law: Knowledge of regulatory laws that affect employment, including understanding of ADA, FMLA, and Title VII/Civil Rights Act.
    • Grievance Resolution: Knowledge of procedures used to investigate and resolve employee grievances.
    • Employee Relations: Knowledge of the broad range of relationships that could affect the employee/employer relationship. This includes knowledge of federal and state laws, company policies, practices and ethical obligations to investigate, evaluate, and recommend an appropriate resolution to employee and labor relations complaints.
    • Be a creative, organized, analytical, resourceful relationship builder with strong negotiating skills and the ability to be objective.
    • Will be patient, insightful, knowledgeable, and credible and have the ability to deal with adversity and diversity.
    • Experience handling grievances up to and including arbitration.
    • Excellent written and oral presentation skills.
    • Experience delivering labor relations training.
    • Must be able to travel for business as required.
